In the military world, everyone knows that the guerrilla tactics is one of very effective war strategy for defense systems. History has proven that one factor causes the American defeat in Vietnam was due to guerrilla tactics applied by Viet Cong. In fact, until now America is still too overwhelmed by al-Qaeda network in several countries due to the guerrilla tactics done by the followers of Osama Bin Laden.
In the history of Indonesian’s struggle, with guerilla tactics and the leadership of the first young general and commander of in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia, General Sudirman, the country could defend itself from the attacks of Dutch troops which had large number of soldiers and much more complete and modern weapons. With his expertise in guerilla tactics, General Sudirman was able to prove that Indonesia still had strength to regain and maintain the country from colonial rule.
General Sudirman is one of the best fighters and leaders of Indonesian nation. He has firm principle and conviction, always puts the interests of community and nation above personal interests. He is always consistent in defending the interests of homeland, nation, and state. This could be seen as the Dutch Military Aggression II where even in a weak position due to his illness, he kept encouraging and leading his men in guerilla war against the Dutch troops. That is why he was awarded as one of the great figures of the revolution of this country.
For approximately seven months, in his illness with very limited medicine, General Sudirman moved from one forest to another, from mountain to mountain to save his country, Indonesia with guerilla tactics. But to his troops, he always gave courage as well as instructions as if he himself did not feel the disease. Unfortunately, on January 29, 1950, the Great Commander in Indonesian Military, General Sudriman died in Magelang and was buried at theSemaki Heroes Cemetery , Yogyakarta . He was then granted as the Hero of Freedom Defender.
