Originally, EIGER is taken from the name of a mountain in Switzerland (3.970 m above sea level) which is well known as one of the top three difficult mountain to climb in the world. It is the easternmost peak of a ridge-crest that extends across the Monch to the Jungfrau at 4,158 m. While the north side of the mountain overlooks from about 3 km above Grinelwald and other inhabited valleys of the Bernese Oberland, the south side overlooks the deeply glaciated region of the Jungfrau-Aletsch, covered by some of the largest glaciers of the Alps.
