If you visit Yogyakarta, the second tourist destination city in Indonesia after Bali, you have the opportunity to land at Adisucipto Airport. This airport located in Yogyakarta was given the name Adisucipto to commemorate an Indonesian independence hero, Adisucipto, who died in battle.
Adisucipto whose full name Augustinus Adisutjipto was born in Salatiga, Central Java, on July 13, 1916. He entered a medical school before joining Indonesian military service where he spent his younger years to perform many difficult and challenging tasks as a military pilot. He was a national hero and an Indonesian air commodore. Adisutjipto was also the founder of the Aviation School in Yogyakarta, precisely in Maguwo Air Field, now known by the name Adisucipto Airport.
Adisucipto died while performing his task as a senior pilot in Indonesian military forces. At that time, the Dutch Military Aggression to Indonesia in Indonesia forced Indonesian leaders to seek help of medication abroad. Adisujipto and along with fellow was ordered to fly to India to get the medicine. On the way home with the help of medication from Malaya, Adisucipto plane was shot down by a Dutch plane. He bravely died with his partner but his spirit continued to be the heart of every Indonesian military pilot until this time.
